Wireless Broadband and security

Hi. I have just rec'd a Siemens wireless router from Orange. Just a couple of questions - does this run alongside our modem, and what about if oue neighbour is wireless, can they pick up our internet or hack into our PC? I'm not very technical so very simple advice would be appreciated. Regards, Tracy

You do not need the modem and the Router, just the Router. When set-up correctly, your neighbours wireless should not interfere with your own - different channels and Security settings.

Others will no doubt come on with more detailed information - unfortunately I am not wireless savvy enough to help further.

What type of modem are you using now?

When using as Wireless you need to setup Encryption for Wireless in the Router Settings box. This should be WPA for best security. Not Wep or Ad-Hoc

Forgot to say, if you do not do the above, others can share your Bandwidth by connecting to your Router

Have now installed a Wireless Adaptor and am trying to install the Wireless Router which is a Siemens. Unfortunately, we have a problem, once we have entered the security code (from back of router) into the set up application. We just get a message saying there is an error with the security code. It is possible that we have misunderstood what we should of been inputting as in an earlier Windows style installation wizard, we put the encryption code as our chosen password rather than the securtity code found on the router. We have been into the properties menu of the network connections and removed the router and re-added it, and then typed in the security code in the available and suitable field. We have tried to set up again but it still doesn't like the securty code.

Please can anybody offer any simple advice on how we can resolve this without resorting to paying Orange a whole load of money.

Many thanks, Tracy

Username and password is the same as you used in your old modem to log on to Orange.

We have never been asked for a username and password, just an encryption code.

It is often admin for both user name and password by default
