Winzip - Is there an alternative?

  tmr 19:50 24 Nov 2006

Does any one now of an alternative freeware/shareware file zip program?
My evaluation version of winzip has expired but I don't feel inclined to buy it as I only ever need it to unzip downloaded files, typically used for software updates etc.

If the smallest file size is important, e.g. for emailing or uploading archives, use 7-Zip. Its LZMA compression method is excellent for most purposes. For compressing websites, the PPMd compression method gives significantly smaller archives, and faster compression, but much slower decompression. Archives can be made as self-extracting *.exe files using either compression method.

For easy of use and widest compatability, IZarc and ZIP format is fine. Anyone still using Compressed Folders in Windows XP should install this. Extraction of compressed files using Window's built-in compressed files support is abysmally slow by comparison.
