WinXP User Login Error

  WarrenS 14:37 28 Feb 2005

Hello all,

A friend of mine has the following problem with WinXP (he's not sure if it's home or professional).

The PC boots to the user login page, you try to login but the PC informs you it's now saving your settings and promptly returns to the user login page.
This happens with all users.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Can you boot into safe-mode? Press F5 at startup.

I'm just finding out. In the mean time if we can boot into safe mode what would you advise?

If you can boot into safe mode, do a full system scan for viruses, ad-aware, corrupt registry files, the lot....

Ok. Sounds logical - thanks.
I am ok with tools for Virus scanning and ad-aware detection but not sure about how to detect corrupt registry files?

Use a program like "CCleaner" (click here) or "Registry Mechanic" (click here)

CCleaner is FREE, but Registry Mechanice isn't...

Ok. Will try shortly.

Will post outcome when done.

sorry, just seen this post and would like to mention that to get into startup options its F8 and not F5.

Still, good luck!

Thanks, well spotted!

Thats what I said on a previous post, but according to (I think it was VoG), F5 boots straight into safe mode....
