I have just taken a WinTv card of a friend, unfortunately I don’t have the driver disk. I though windows xp might install the drivers automatically, but that is not so. I have thought about downloading the driver form the net but I am not sure what make or modle the WinTv card is for any ideas.

A couple of things, try running this audit program it may pick it up: click here the only other thing is to take the card out and carefully study it for any markings on the board.

I've heard XP is pretty good at picking up devices, but I think a WinTV card is a bit too specialised for it.

Check on the card's label which chipset it uses (there are two different types) and go to the Hauppauge website's support pages:

Chipset info at:

You need to download the correct driver for your chipset and a second which loads the software to watch programmes, change channels etc.
