WinME startup problem

  Rayuk 18:27 31 Jul 2003

On booting up system it shows Desktop wallpaper, then hangs.
Cannot start in safe mode, tried scanreg/restore same problem.

Anyone have any ideas to the cause or solution to the problem.

This happened after a normal shutdown.

Will try that tomorrow. Its a workmates pc.

Any chance it could be a virus?

No go with scanreg/fix.

Other possibles I have seen are
Tried battery and cmos no go.

Will have to buy some floppies to run anti virus rescue.

Never mentioned in opening post that the desktop walpaper appears but no icons or start menu.If this means anything.

Sorry Rayuk, just seen you have already said you have tried safe mode. You say you have tried scanreg, how did you do it? If you can't even get into Safe Mode, then boot using your Windows
Startup (floppy) Disk and choose 4) Minimal Boot. Try the scanreg option from a dos prompt.

At the A:\> prompt, type "scanreg /restore" (no quotes and note the space
between the g and /) then press Enter.
Follow the screen prompts and when asked, select the LAST 'good' date
before the problem arose, continuing with the instructions.

So far I have tried the following
Scanreg /restore[loaded from 3 days earlier/no go]
Scanreg/fix [said repaired registry/no go]
New battery[no go]
cleared cmos[no go]

Not tried the minimal boot though, will make a note of that. This is an HP pc so only came with a recovery disk so cant instal over top either.

Will have to try anti virus floppies/Hard drive diagnostics/memtest.

Thanks for your input

One more option. Whatever has happened can be undone with system restore, obviously you cant access SR but there is the option of forcing the little tinker.

With the Me Startup disk.

choose Minimum Boot .

At the command prompt, type edit c:\windows\system.ini , and then
press enter.

Edit the shell= line so that it looks like this:

Press ALT+F, and then press S to save the changes to the System.ini

Press ALT+F, and then press X.

Remove the Startup disk, and restart.
When it restarts, Program Manager should

On the File menu, click Run , type msconfig in the Command Line box,
and then press enter.

Click Launch System Restore

Or at this stage you can now run system Restore by typing
c:\windows\system\restore\rstrui.exe at a command prompt, and then
pressing enter.
