We have recently upgraded to windowsxp from windows98SE, but the system regularly crashes on start up and shut down saying serious error, invovling file fat32. Can anyone give us help as to why or what may be causing this problem as we have not experienced it prior to upgrade?
you dont need to format your hdd.you can change from fat 32 to the more stable NTFS ,but you may not be able to access your original os,I have done this twice for other people and have had no bad side effects..
Go to Start | Run Type in cmd Type in the following:
convert x: /fs:ntfs
(where x is the drive letter of the drive you wish to convert).
If you are converting your C:\ drive, you will need to reboot in order for the conversion to be done
But as a follow up, the very best option is as madboy says and do a clean install off xp,make sure you have access to all your drivers and also check for compatibility,if you are having problems with your upgrade, it could well be a driver or compatibility issue.
