Windows\system32\config\system missing/currupted

I have been ask to look at a friends PC (XP home) when you switch on it starts to boot but fails to load windows. There is an error message which tells me Windows\system32\config\system is either missing or currupted. I have tried safe mode and anything I can think of, I thought maybe I could use the system file from my PC but when I try to copy to an external device I am told the system file is in use and will not allow me to copy. My question is can I use a system folder from a different PC and if I can how do I manage to copy the file. All ideas greatfully accepted.
