Windows XP SP2 startup error

Can anyone help.

I have just installed the latest mini ipod updater software and when I rebooted my Toshiba notebook the following error occurred:-
'windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupted:

I have tried running in safe mode and using a previous configuration but neither of those works.
According to the microsoft support website the registry may be corrupted!
Is it possible to to a system restore if safe mode will not work or alternatively repair windows another way?

I do not have a standard XP CD, only a system restore DVD from Toshiba which contains windows XP.
Has anyone any other ideas before I do a full restore using this disc and lose all my data.

Many thanks,

Windows could not start because the following files is missing or corrupt

Insert and boot from your WindowsXP CD.
At the first R=Repair option, press the R key
Press the number that corresponds to the correct location for the installation of Windows you want to repair.
Typically this will be #1
Enter in the administrator password when requested
cd \windows\system32\config
Depending on which section was corrupted:
ren software software.bad or ren system system.bad
Depending on which section was corrupted
copy \windows\repair\system
copy \windows\repair\software
Take out the CD ROM and type exit

Thanks JoeC & Fruit Bat /\0/\.

JoeC - My notebook has OEM installed software so according to Microsoft this should not be used.

Fruit Bat /\0/\ - If I install the system restore disc the only 2 options I have are

1. Full restore (lose all data)

2. Advanced user options. Selecting this loads a command line with a '.gho' extension?
There is no r= repair option.

Any more ideas?

Many thanks for your help, XP has been repaired using a 'normal' XP disc.

The following error has occurred again:-
'windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupted:

PC World have repaired windows again and are blaming spyware for causing the registry corruption. The laptop has now been remastered and I am using Adaware spyware remover.

Is it possible for spyware to damage the registry in this way, or are they perhaps using it as an excuse?
