~OK, heres the deal, basically, my computer will boot up fine until the User profile lists come up (windows XP) Then i click on any profile and the background loads, then the HDD light stops working and all i can bring up is the task manager. Explorer is running, but no shortcuts/desktop/taskbar/start. Nothing works! i need serious help. Before the fatal reboot when nothing worked, i had installed something called Internet manager, tried to download the new world of warcraft patch and installed and uninstalled Google desktop search. Really need urgent help! would be great if i could get an explorer window up at least, i can use run and cmd.
God i hope i can save my files.
The comp is near 2 yr old, 120GB SATA HDD with Windows XP home ed.

PLEASE REPLY FAST! need urgent help.

This will take awhile to complete and you may be asked for the CD to be in the drive if windows is not preinstalled on the hard drive.

have you tried safe mode for a system restore?

  Squarehed 21:42 22 Apr 2005

I have tried to boot into safe mode, but it hangs at the part where it gives you all the directories of the drivers and things, left that for a good ten mins. Now trying to boot from the XP cd will chjeck out all those links after this.

A Repair Install will replace the system files with the files on the XP CD used for the Repair Install. It will leave your applications and settings intact, but Windows updates will need to be reapplied.

A Repair Install will replace files altered by ad ware and malware, but will not fix an ad ware, malware problem.

XP Repair install

1. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.

2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below

This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

3. Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.

To setup Windows XP now and Repair Install , press ENTER. do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console). I repeat, do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R".

4. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.

5. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair.

6. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settigs will remain intact.
