windows xp reinstall

I recently bought Widows Home XP to replace the back up copy supplied with my pc. However, on loading it I find that I have two copies on the same drive!. The idea was to format the drive , removing all traces of the previous edition and give me a clean start. how do I achieve thisso only the new copy of XP is present?

set pc in bios to boot from cd then restart pc with xp in cd drive,follow instructions for clean install
