Windows XP number of installations.

I understand that it is legal to install a copy of XP Pro on each of 1 PC & 1laptop without buying further licences.
Anyone know if this is correct?

  Totally-braindead 19:21 24 Jan 2006

I may be incorrect in this wait till the others answer but my belief is one copy of Xp one computer regardless of whether one is a laptop or not. So to answer your question I believe this is incorrect.

One copy and license, one pc. For two machines you need two copies.

What others have said.... One lisence is for ONE computer.

Applies to retail copies of MS Office;

Look for the first occurrence of `laptop` on the following page; click here

Irregardless of legality, is there anything else stopping xp pro being installed on other computers?
For instance, how would anyone know?

You have to activate XP online with Microsoft. If that licence key is already activated you can't do so again and XP will expire in can't remember how many days.

30 days of use before activation,but this is only with Home.Pro doesn't require activation,but if you have already installed it on a PC and then try to get the Updates on a 2nd install the "Genuine Validation Tool" checks your XP and if its dodgy in any way,you can't get the Updates.

"Pro doesn't require activation"

Every time I have built a machine and installed Pro it has required activation.

I wont argue,I dont have Pro,only Home. ;-))
