A friend of mine has a non legal copy of windows xp professional installed on his pc, it has no recent service packs and pc will not let me install sp2, he recently had a problem with itunes and a dialogue box stated he needed to install latest itunes and xp sp2 but installation fails with message"product key might be invalid for your winows product" the question I would like to ask is.If I get a genuine copy of windows xp from ebay etc, can I use this legitimate copy to carry out a windows repair so as to avoid losing all his programs and data, or will I have to install genuine copy and start again and reload all his programs.
apologies for long posting.Iknow that his non legit copy illegal butI am just stating all the facts thankyou

Can you not just activate it with the new product key that you will purchase?

Do you think that will work

Check if it gives you an option to active Windows with a different key. If it hasn't been activated the option should still be there in start-accessories
