Windows XP - Boot up - Detecting???

  Gaz 25 21:29 30 Jan 2003

Every time I boot XP it comes up with a blank screen and says detecting... then loads windows XP start up screen. I have tried editiong the bios and setting XP to fast detect. But nothing makes it any faster?

It is presumably searching for HDD's and how do I stop this from happening?

Are you on a network or have a network card fitted?

  Gaz 25 21:33 30 Jan 2003

There is a built in network card, which I have disabled because I am in no need to hook it up to my Network just yet. Could enabling it sort it out?

It is a BIOS screen and not a Windows XP screen.

It could be the EIDE cable .... can you check the connections are fully attached. Is it a 40 or 80 cable?

I have checked all connections, etc. And it is a 80 Cable.

Try changing the first boot device to the floppy drive.

Gaz 25.

Try this;

Advanced cmos features,

First boot hard disk/ ide0 Whichever is listed.

Standard cmos features,

Set hard drive to manual, it will then not look for it at post.

Any cdrom drives you have change the setting to none.

What this will give you is it will only search for items not attached to ide cables.

Save settings and reboot.

But if I set the CD-roms, etc to manual windows cannot find any CD-roms.
