Windows XP background programmes 11:17 27 Oct 2005

Can anyone advise where I can find out what programmes Windows XP automatically runs in the background (loads on startup), What programmes are absolutely necessary, and what Programmes I can switch off.

My system seems to take ages to start up and shut down and I feel that many of these programmes are the problem.

click start / run and type

this will take you to the config setup where you can view the startup files (end tab)

there you can see what is starting each time.

This is also a very good little program that tells a lot more about program start ups. Worth a look..

When I open my pc the little hourglass next to the mouse is jumping all over the place. I'm not sure if there is a programme running in the background, but it is behaving very erratically -but everything else is OK except for this annoying little hourglass. How can I get rid of it.
