windows xp advice

A friend of mine has just got a new pc and on it is the windows xp operating system. What i need advice on is when the pc is started up a lot of programs start up as well.can any one tell me how to get into the system configuration so i can stop everything from starting up that is not needed.

any other advice on shortcuts would be good as well or perhaps some web addresses to learn a bit more about the winxp operating system.

Be careful on MSCONFIG. You could end up ending a program you need...

Go into the Startup folder in the programs list which you find by pressing the Start button and then select All Programs, the select the Startup folder and see how many programs are in their, any unnecessary programs in their just delete them but be careful not to delete anything that you think is needed.
