Windows Vista updates no co-operating

I have my windows update set to "Download updates, but let me choose when to install them". I do this to avoid installing SP2 which freezes my PC when waking from sleep. However, yesterday, Hotfix kb954708 installed without me giving it permission. How can this be so? Which brings me to my second oddity:

The above Hotfix kb954708 killed the sound on my PC. I have uninstalled it and the sound has returned. However, looking at my sound settings when I had the problem, everything appeared to be OK. Any suggestions as to why?

I have had no error messages, but was aware of the update on closing and opening windows.
