when i click start then windows update the page that is displayed is this "Thank you for your interest in Windows Update

where as before i used to get the screen wear you could scan for updates.
im running win xp pro wats up any ideas

Sorry to ask the obvious, but is it a legal copy of XP Pro and, if so, has it been activated correctly?
If the answer is Yes, then try the alternative of BigFix, which works on the same principle as WindowsUpdate:
click here
Are you running a firewall? If you are then disbale it and try the Windows Update again.
If it still fails, then go to, start, run, type:
regedit
Click ok.
Follow and locate the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\User Agent\Post Platform
Now delete it.
However please back it up, by exporting. Thats if you have any problems you can click on the backup and it will put import back into the registry.
File > Export > Choose a name > Save
