Windows Update error message

I have logged on today at windowsupdate.com to download the new updates and find that the software has been updated to version 6.

I let the scan go as it should and instead of coming up with the screen for how many updates I can install - all I get is the following error message:-

Error number: 0x80072F76]

My PC is a P4, 3.2 GHz machine with a Liteon DVD-ROM drive and a Sony DW-D22A rewriter.
I also have 1GB of RAM as well as a Sapphire Radeon Atlantis Advantage Pro 256MB graphics card.
I'm running Windows XP SP2 with all patches and updates applied before this recent lot of new patches.

Does anyone have ideas as to what is going on, or have they had a similar problem to mine trying to access these updates? How can this be resolved?

Any replies and ideas gratefully appreciated.

Regards

I've just tried these fixes in the Microsoft KB article and nothing has worked.

Thanks for trying - any more ideas that I can try?

I usually just click on Start/all programmes/Windows Update but I tried your link and it worked ok.

Using Windows Explorer, open System32 in the Windows folder. Locate the subfolder CatRoot2 and rename it to CR2old etc. Now try Windows Update again. If this works, delete the CR2old folder.

If you have installed Web accelerator disable it as it interfere with Updates.

I've just upgraded and installed the latest version of Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta with no problem but when I went to Windows Update, the page tries to load but I am always left with a blank page ..no error message nothing, whereas previously there was no problem accessing Windows Update.

So I was wondering if this fault may stem from the new Microsoft AntiSpyware update or could there be some other cause.

Cheers for your help.
