windows protection error?

hi just wondered what a windows protection error was, happened when i shut down pc?
help much appreciated!

win 98se intel celeron 750 30gb hdd 256 133 memory

Windows Protection Errors are generated when any of the following
conditions occur:

?A real-mode driver and a protected-mode driver are in conflict.

?The registry is damaged.

?The or file is infected with a virus or is

?A driver is being loaded from the System.ini file for which a
protected-mode driver has already been initialized.

?There is a physical I/O or RAM address conflict.

?There are incorrect CMOS settings for a built-in peripheral device
(such as cache settings, CPU timing, hard disks, and so on).

?The Plug and Play feature of the computer's BIOS is not working

?The computer contains a malfunctioning system
cache or memory.

?The computer's motherboard is not working properly.

i put in a new 512 memory stick a few months ago and that is when the error started, thought it was a bad stick, so removed. pc has been fine up until today.

Well, 512 is the max under 98 unless you Use the MaxFileCache setting in the System.ini file to reduce the maximum amount of memory that Vcache uses to 512 megabytes (524,288 KB) or less. Or a third party software like Cacheman.

However it tends to identify itself as a "There is not enough memory available to run this program.
"Quit one or more programs, and then try again."

"Insufficient memory to initialise windows. Quit one or more memory-resident programs or remove unnecessary utilities from your Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files, and restart your computer."
