windows not starting up-stop message

  butter fingers 19:58 15 Mar 2010

Hi everybody. my sons laptop is not stating up. the windows splash screen is reached followed by a blue screen with the following message:
STOP:0000210 (registry file failure)the registry cannot load the hive (file):
\systemroot\system32\config\software or its og or alternate.
it is corrupt, absent or not writable

I can reimage it but wondered if there was a way to start it up again so he doesn't lose files without doing this?

In recovery console type

Copy c:\windows\repair\software C:windows\system32\config

If it asks replace file then select Yes
press enter.

type exit and attempt to rebbot without the CD in the drive.

Ok am just about to run recovery console to try. I had started following the instructions at click here to do this but didn't get to your instructions which are further down point 5

click here explains how to backup several of the the old "hive" files (can't see the point of saving a corrupt file) and replacing with those from repair folder.

All I've done is tell you how to replace the one windows is saying is faulty, you may have to replace the others if windows will no boot, depends on how many are corrupt.
