Windows Messenger - turn it off?

Friend had some Spanish students staying. She now has dozens of contacts in Spain which keep announcing they're online and sending Instant Messages.

Is there an easy way to get rid, she doesn't use Messenger herself? Or is the only option to uninstall as in click here?

In XP go to Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services and disable Messenger.

Windows Messenger Service is for internal networks and yes, should be switched off.

IF you have XP SP2 it should be off by default.

Windows Messenger 4.7 comes with Windows and is an instant chat program like MSN Messenger, it can also be removed and disabled - but it does disable a Remote Assistance via IM if that is done.
The link you posted will do the job.
