Windows Media Player image problem

I just received a file that opens with Windows Media Player. The video plays but it plays with all these psychedelic orange, blue and pink colours. This periodically happens. I have XP and Version 9 of Media Player. It does not always happen but I'd say about 50% of the time it does. Is there some way to tweek this?

"The video plays but it plays with all these psychedelic orange, blue and pink colours"

do you mean the visualizations? if so it is because wmp has not got the correct codec the the file type, you may well need to download a generic codec pack.
