windows media player 9.0 problem

A real pain, often wmp will not play downloaded music or video files. It gives the impression it is connecting then nothing happens no matter how long I wait. It takes several reboots then it will suddenly be OK.I have a fast broadband connection
I am running windows 98 SE
Zone Alarm Pro (firewall)
AVG 7.1 Professional(antivirus)
Counterspy 1.5 (spyware)

download and upgrade to WMP 10. You can get it from Microsoft's website.

WMP10 is XP + only. Have you tried playing the files in boring old MediaPlayer2, which you should find in C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\ called mplayer2.exe - just to check if it's a codec problem or something. Try uninstalling WMP9 if you can, run a registry cleaner, and then reinstall it. Great regcleaner here click here
