Windows Media not playing video clips

When I Open Windows Media player,everythings fine i can listen to music etc,but when i want to play a video or mpeg it freezes up my system completely so i have to re-boot?any idea why,have done obvious things like defrag,scan disk,virus check etc no problems found.

Are you trying to access an optical drive when the freeze occurs, or a hard drive?
I ask because I have had a similar problem recently when an optical drive connected through a PCI IDE board stopped working and caused the PC to hang. I solved this by downloading the latest BIOS for the IDE board.

i had the same problem after i formated pc. it ended up i forgot to install motherboard drivers(ooopppssss)anyway try updating drivers.

Someone suggested uninstalling/re-installing my video codecs?,how do i go about this?.Or where would i find info.Thanks

Is it a file corruption?
Try open with... real player or some other media player.
If it plays at least you have eliminated the file itself
