WINDOWS ME crash - cannot upgrade %1to%2

  warmfreshmilk 12:57 07 Jan 2004

My computer runnning windows ME wont run windows , and freezes when I try safe mode.. It will enter SETUP , and I get a message WINDOWS COULD NOT UPGRADE FILE %1to%2

I think this is a virus problem , but cant even load McAfee to attempt to sort it out..

If this fails , I may have to replace my hard disk , but that would be very sad..

If anyone can offer advice , please do !

I had the same on a customers computer yesterday, the hard drive had gone down and the only option was to replace it.

On start up smart reported that the drive was faulty and I could not do a clean install either.

Fortunately the customer always does regular back-ups.

Thanks for the advice/links - I'm going to try the lot before replacing the hard drive/reformatting, as I've got a bunch of stuff on there that I should have backed up, but haven't...
