windows live messenger

Someone or something has downloaded windows live essentials on me over the past three days - and whenever I fire up my pc I get a windows live messenger page asking me to sign in or register. I don't want to, but cannot find a way of blocking the page from opening. Can I just uninstall windows live completely.

Go to add/remove or programs and features (depending on OS) and scroll down to Windows Live Essentials. Click on it then click uninstall. On the window that shows click on uninstall then continue and select messenger. Follow the prompts.
