Windows LIve Messenger

I have a friend who has a problem with Windows Live Messenger. When he tries to login to this he gets a message asking him to upgrade to the latest version. If he chooses Yes to upgrade, it goes through the installation apparently to completion, but then the installation process goes into reverse and undoes itself.

A message appears to say Windows Live Messenger could not be installed. It says - 'Try installing Windows Live programs again. Programs were not installed because the installation was cancelled. Aborted:0x80004004'

If he chooses No at the original prompt he is not able to login at all. Any ideas?

Thanks for those suggestions. I will try them when I see my friend.
