windows firewall

Having issues with antivirus programs accessing the net for updates.
The message that appears states that the XP firewall could be blocking the connection.
IE will access the net OK,and the XP firewall cant be accessed via control panel to switch on.It says its switched off in the services.I have checked the services and its not disabled.

A nasty virus maybe ?

Hi Covergirl,

I have ran various anti virus/spyware scans, all suspect items were deleted, but still the firewall refuses to start.
Have ran sfc /scannow and all the usual fixes, but no luck let.

XP firewall is rubbish, you should not rely on it.

Get something like Zonealarm to run on XP.

(Vista and & firewalls are OK)

Hi Fruit Bat /\0/\

Prior to the problems the PC was running Mcafee security. But it was causing a few problems.
When Mcafee was un-installed and the XP firewall was required temporarily, that's when the problems started.

The PC is now running Zone Alarm Free.

Thank you

The PC is now running Zone Alarm Free

installing zonealarm will automatically switch off XP firewall.
