Windows Explorer crashes

I have recently downloaded an avi file on azureus but when I try to open the file exploer crashes and the screen goes blank for a few seconds. This only seems to happen with certain files as I have downloaded other avi files and they open and play without any problems. is this something to do with windows security protocols?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Video is also governed by things called codecs. There are many and they are basically encoding rules for the transaltion and playing of footage on your computer, from varous formats. divX is 1 form of encoding, and more importantly is directx. make sure these are all uptodate, reboot and try again

The file in question is xvid. I downloaded the codec the file plays ok but explorer still crashes. I am now able to convert the file to an mpeg because of the installed codec and explorer remains stable. It is when the file is left as an avi the crash occurs.
