Windows Defender screen freeze

A recent update of Windows Defender is causing a screen freeze when scanning. It halts at HKLM\Software\Classes\magnet and I need to switch the pc off at the mains.
Running a search doesn't find it and I have uninstalled Windows Defender
Any suggestions please?

normally I would uninstall the prog - reboot and download it again.

Thanks for your feedback but I had already tried that and the same thing happened again.

belmore1 try starting in safe mode and removing defender then reboot again in safe mode. Do not run it from the download but save it and then run it. Once installed try it in safe mode and if all ok reboot and try it with a normal start. If you still have problems then it is something that you have starting up normally which is fighting with defender.

Thanks howard64 that seems to have solved the problem.
