windows xp could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt \windows\system32\config\system is the error message i'm getting on my new evesham pc for the second time in 2 weeks. Any thoughts on how this is caused as I don't fancy installing everything fresh every fortnight.

thanks guys, but I'm struggling with the dos commands from VoG's last link, I don't know how to put them in. I am trying but the way I put them in is "not a recognized command" Where do the "enter" commands come? Sorry to be incredibly dense but this is a blonde OD'ed on liquor choccys here.

I'm no DOS expert and it is MS but shouldn't there be a space between config and REN so you'd type in:

cd C:\Windows\System32\Config and then enter followed by

REN system system.oldCOPY etc.

??

Sorry didn't clarify, enter is just press the 'enter' key.
