Windows CD Key Confusion

  babybell 18:45 13 Sep 2010

I have an old desktop PC running Windows XP that I am formatting back to factory settings in the hope of selling it for a few quid.

I have the Windows XP CD but I have lost the manual with the key on. I used a piece of software that recovered the key for me and so I reformatted the PC and started to reinstall windows. However, when it came to entering the key, it said it was incorrect (I triple checked that I had wrote the key down right)

Anyway, after a quick google search, I found that I can retrieve the key from the actual CD. So I followed the path and I did find the key (which was differet to the 1st one I had), however, upon enter the key, I recieved the same 'key is incorrect' message.

So two keys, but still no luck? Anyone have any suggestions?

Key on a sticker somewhere on the machine?

Ha ha.

Right, I've just looked and yes there is a CD key, but interesting the key on the sticker is for XP Home and the CD I'm using is for Professional! So thats why that hasn't worked.

After trawling back through all my CD's I have found the original CD that came with the operating system and its worked!

Thanks for starting the mental ball rolling Fruit Bat!
