For years I've used the Windows backup facility each week to back up the Documents and Settings for all 4 users on my PC.It's worked flawlessly.However, today it doesn't want to know.Having started the wizard, 60 minutes later it's still saying "Looking for backup devices ...".My usual backup device is there (and working) and nothing's changed on the PC (except this week's Patch Tuesday updates).O/S is XP SP3 fully patched.Any ideas?
Try uninstalling the recent updates, then see if it works ok again.

Have you still got plenty of room on your drive? Have you done any house-keeping lately, like clearing Temp files etc? Run a reg clean and/or anti-everything scans?
