Windows 98SE - Programs running in Backgound

  DaveLH 15:36 05 Sep 2005

Before running various Utility Programs eg Disc Scan it is desirable to stop all programs running in the Background eg Virus Scan, Firewall.

How do I find out what programs are running in the Background?

Press ctrl-alt-del once

that opens the task manager

cancel everything except explorer

Better to start in safe mode - press F5 at startup.

Pressing "CNTL/ALT/DEL" opens something called "Close Program" - this does list various task for which "CANCEL" is an option but depessing same does nothing.
"Safe Mode" seems to be activated by pressing "DEL" not "F5" at "Start-up" but that produces "CMOS Option" - interfering with something I know nothing about could cause disaster.

Advice still being sought.

F5 should go strait into Safe Mode in 98 if not press F8 and choose from list

Safe mode is not activated by del. That is the bios.

Safe mode is reached by pressing F5 continuously at startup.
