Windows 7 x64 Freezing Question

  Chris Webster 17:17 26 May 2010

Hi all,

HP dv7 Laptop Windows 7 64bit.

Is there anything within W7 that could give me a clue (in laymans terms) as to why my laptop freezes?

I have looked at the Reliability Monitor and in the last 13 weeks it has frozen 17 times. The graph now looks like a map of the Alps.

I have also looked at the Event Viewer but I cannot make head nor tail of it.

The freezes mainly occurs when I'm connected to the net (I.E 8), the screen and mouse pointer just freeze up forcing me to do a 'forced shut down'.

A typical freeze up occurs when I am changing web pages or browsing forums such as on here or doing anything that requires the green progress bar at the bottom of page to move along the screen.

It has also frozen once or twice when updating Malwarebytes.

Regards, Chris.

Try Command prompt and type in ipconfig /flushdns it should tell you DNS has been flushed see if that makes any difference.
Or maybe Run and type in sfc /scannow see if that helps.
Sometimes it is the memory playing up but see what others say.

Make sure you have the latest Flash and Java updates any old ones remove them first before updating.
Maybe try Firefox or another browser just to make sure it is not IE8 that is playing up.
Chkdsk.Defrag.C Cleaner if it works on the 64Bit
And what Security have you got including the Firewall.

I had already tried your above suggestions, but thank you anyway.

Security, W7 firewall, NAV 2010, Windows Defender, Malwarebytes and A-Squared.

Regards, Chris.
