Windows 7 will not update.

Hi Folks. I'm having real problems with windows updates. I'm running windows 7 64 bit.I noticed it had stopped downloading them automatically. When I click check for updates it just gets stuck for hours. I have tried resetting windows updates etc but nothing has helped. This also coincided with one of the svchost.exe being constantly stuck on 25% cpu. Windows defender also gets stuck when looking for updates so I'm wondering if this might be a issue with the windows update server as my girlfriends machine running Vista is also having similar problems updating? Is anyone having similar problems and is there anything else I could try? I have the latest update client installed already. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.
