how do I find out if my present xp apps and files will function if I upgrade my pc. or if I buy a new pc with win 7 already installed and transfer my files etc to it.

I wouldn't take the Win7 compatibility checked too seriously.

I had quite a few old apps that it reckoned wouldn't run, but they all do.

The trick seems to be stick with Win7 32 bit, install AND run under compatibility mode and ensure 'run as Administrator' is ticked.

I would go with Win 64 bit and follow the instructions as per KremmenUK - you will find most 32 bit applications will run quite happily in 64 bit mode - I don't have any problems with 64 bit Win 7 Pro - that is the way forward.
