windows 2000 - print spooler subsystem error

  simon s 13:44 06 Feb 2004

After installing Windows Service Pack 4 I get an error message on startup saying that spoolsv.exe has generated errors and will be shut down. I can no longer see my printer in the printer settings, and if I try to add a new printer it says the print subsystem is unavailable. Any ideas gratefully received.

Try going into the Command Prompt and type

net start spooler

and hit enter.

Andy - tried that and got error message saying that spoolsv.exe and created errors etc. I could see my printers in the printers folder though, but couldn't print to them and their properties wouldn't display due to spooler subsystem error

Go Start > Settings > Control Panel

Administrative Tools > Services

Find the service "Print Spooler".

Set it to "Automatic" start-up.

Reboot the pc

Try a print

if no luck

Delete and reinstall your printers and printer drivers.

Thanks to all - problem solved! I went to the page Andy suggested and did the following:
open regedit (e.g. click Start, key regedit and press Enter)

navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environments\Windows NT x86\Drivers

under this key, there will be the keys Version-2 and Version-3 (one or the other of these may be absent - not a problem)

the sub-keys under these contain the printer driver configuration information

delete all the sub-keys inside Version-2 and Version-3, but not these keys themselves

open a Command Prompt window

key the commands
net stop spooler
net start spooler

I then re-installed the printer drivers with success.
Again I am very grateful for people taking time to help out.
