Win95 - No Signal To Monitor / HDD Problem

  [DELETED] 10:35 22 Oct 2003

These are probably related.

Win95 PC

All drivers have been updated to no avail.

First problem.

On a cold boot up the HDD won't start - no POST or BIOS either. Monitor shows a flashing Orange light. Hit the reset switch and maybe it'll start after 2 or 3 goes.

Then after 2 - 10 minutes the screen blanks, the monitor shows flashing orange light and the HDD light is permanently on until you hit the reset switch.

Overheating has been eliminated as the case cover is off and the HDD has nothing to trap heat around it.

I suspect the HDD is playing up but i can't find a problem when scanning it in another PC.

Anyone got any further ideas please??

having the case cover off is more likely to cause it to overheat than having the cover on as the air will not flow properly, Anyway this is unlikely to be the problem try a known good PSU (particularly if the moniter power comes from the PSU)

Monitor WAS powered from PSU. However even changing it for a lead that goes to the mains hasn't helped.

Where can i get a PSU for an old P166 PC?? The Mobo plugs aren't the same as modern ones (looks like two plugs of 6 wires in a single line instead of a plug with two rows of wires.)

HDD now not spinning making ANY noise.....

You need to either get someone to check the PSU volages or obtain an AT power unit to try as a replacement so that you can ensure that the problem is the PSU. The other possibility is that the hard drive is failing to spin up as that could also produce the results you are experiencing, you may find that "jogging" the case of the computer at swtch on will get it started, but if that is the problem you will need to replace the drive.

If you live anywhere near Southend on Sea you're welcome to an old server case for AT motherboards (it has a bare motherboard installed. The PSU itself is massive so probably wouldn't fit into a standard case but it was working the last time I used it.
