win xp pro wont close down

tried this before xp wont close down or restart when that option is chosen. my system is home built amd 2000+, 512mb ddr running win xp pro
any help would be appreciated new to xp

Have you go all of the updates from the windows update website ??? this may solve it, its worth a try.

If it is hanging at the close-down window, open Task manager to see if there is a program running in the background. This may not be responding and cause your problem. So in a sense it will be that program and not windows itself that is refusing to let go. For example, does your internet connection log off OK? j.

As Djohn has said try Task Manager - Ctr+Alt+Del - it will probably show a program not responding. If not try closing the programs one by one.

Also, if you've just built your system, try re-installing XP - I do not think that is your problem. But it may be worth a try.

if it is "hanging" at "saving your settings"
click start>type regedit>click on Hkey_local_machine/system current controllers/control .Click on the "control" folder>select"wait to keep service time out">right click on it>select "modify.Set it to a value less than 2000 say a 1000 at least as a test
