Win XP inconsistent logon

When I start up my system, approx. 2 in 3 attempts it freezes at the "loading your personal settings" stage. The other 1 in 3 times it proceeds to boot up completely normally.
System is:
Win XP Pro with all updates.
P4, 3.2 GHz, overclocked to 3.85 (please note the symptoms appear even when the CPU is running at its normal speed).
Asus P4P800E m/b with 2Gb PC3200 RAM.
2 x 160Gb SATA HDDs.
Various USB devices.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be causing these annoying symptoms?
Thanks,
Richard.

I'm working hrough the MS suggestions. No luck as yet, though I haven't had much spare time.
