Win 98 installation, upgrade version problems.

Hi folks, am I toast?

Bought a 2nd hand laptop a couple of years ago at a computer fair.

It came preinstalled with win 98. No didks but there was a directory on the hdd with all the set up files.

Decided it was time for a reinstall, put the set up files directory on a cd and reformattted laptop.

Now come to reininstall and it turns out that the version of windows I was sold is an update and the installation program is asking for a qualifying product.

Annoyingly I have disposed of both the copies of win 3.1 and 95 I had years ago.

Have I had it? Is there anything on the Web I can download to get things moving?

Thanks. Epirb.

I have a Genuine windows 95 disk with product key. It's been gathering dust for years.I will not be using it again.

Yours if you want it?

Been offered help with this so I guess we can call it solved (Thanks peeps!)

However, I was just wondering what file or files it is that windows set up utilities go looking for to confirm upgrade eligibility?

Any one any ideas, just out of interest??

Cheers, Epirb.

Whatever is on the setup disc as usually no further discs are asked for. Please tick as solved.

Do you mean the boot disk?

Or wot?

Cheers, Epirb.
