Win 7 shutdown problem

My new Dell laptop with Win 7 64 bit Home Premiium OS doesn't shutdown properly. Having shutdown with the proper procedure & walked away I return to find the machine still logging off. My only option seems to be to power off. When I boot up next time I get the options to start in safe mode etc.
Anybody any idea what I have done?

Try a system file scan, open the command prompt by right click, and select run as administrator. At the prompt type sfc /scannow and hit enter.

before you run the scan detach any peripherals, eg printer etc.

OK, that seems to have done it. Thanks
