Why isn't my VGA-HDMI adapter working?

  crlcrl 11:10 06 Oct 2016

Hi, I have a Toshiba laptop that doesn't have a HDMI port. I bought a HDMI cable and a VGA to HDMI adaptor so that I could watch things from the laptop on the TV. I've connected them all to each other and selected 'connect to another display' from the control panel, but my TV still just says 'no signal'. Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be or what I should do to fix it? Thanks!

Vga is an analogue output, HMDI is a digital a lot of these cheap adapter cables just don't work.

FN+F5 is usually the key to swap to external display on a toshiba

Details of the adapter would help. Does it need external power source? The two signals are very different and will need to be converted, not simply plugged in with and adapter.
