why do they ask for numbers

I'm not really asking for help, but wonder if anyone knows why on some web sites when I am sending something they ask me to confirm by re-typing in some characters they show to me in a squiggly script?

It's a security measure to confirm that the application is not being made by a robot or trawler. These things cannot read the squiggly letters.

because spammers can not send in bulk , that number changes each time.
