Where's my Format Gone?

I have three CD/DVD Drives on my computer (two internal, one USB). All are capable of recording. I cannot format CDs or DVDs (+ or - RW) for data storage on any of them. I can find no format command – e.g. by right clicking on the drive as displayed in My Computer.

I have tried installing B’s (clip version 5) but it only recognises one of my drives. (Consulting B’s website I find that my other drives are not on their supported list). When trying to format on the recognised drive using B’s clip, it always fails sometimes at the end of the physical format and sometimes at the end of the logical format (both stick at 98% complete). I then get the disc failure message. Simple burning via an assortment of CD/DVD burners seems to work. What is wrong?

I am running XP professional with service pack 2 installed. (The problems existed at SP1 as well). I have an alternative boot to my older ME installation, where the DC/DVD Drive problems persist.

Why would you want to format recordable cd/dvd's? Just burn direct to the media by whatever burning program you have or simply drag and drop your files direct to the drive.
Cd's & dvd's come ready to burn to.
