When you hit F8

you should see a boot option menu, from which you can select safe mode, but if that doesn't work for you do this:-

1. Go to Start and click on 'Run'.

2. Type: msconfig and click on OK

3. Select the tab marked 'BOOT.INI'

4. Tick the box marked: /SAFEBOOT and click OK

5. Click the button marked 'Restart'

The computer will now restart in safe mode, and you can run the removal tool and apply the Microsoft patch. Restart the computer normally, and go back and remove the /SAFEBOOT tick.

Good luck.
