Whats an IEEE 1394 adapter

Selecting a new desktop pc from the Dell site, everything going ok until asked if I required an IEEE 1394 adapter (3port) cable, well for £10 I said yes, but can anyone (in reasonable lay-man terms) tell me what the heck it is before I order.

IEEE 1393 (also known as firewire) is the normal method of connecting a digital video camera to a computer. It can also be used to connect other external devices such as disc drives. It gives fast data transfer at rates similar to USB 2.
