...would you recommend downloading for a knew PC?

My sister has just brought her new laptop round. So far I have downloaded, CCleaner and FireFox.

Anymore recommendations?

If it has pre installed trial prog of anti virus, remove. I'd then go for MSE, but I know others prefer AVG or Avast! - it's up to you. I'd also put on Superantispyware.

I suggest: Firewall : PCTools
Anti virus: Avira, Avast or MSE - many here have found a bit of a compatability problem with AVG,(Instal only one of these);for anti malware: Spywareblaser, Superantispyware and Malawarebytes.
All the above are free.

I would go along with john bunyan's selections but choose either Avast or Avira for the Anti-Virus.
Also maybe add WOT which warns you of bad sites.

As jb says, make sure to have only one antivirus program installed at any given time.

I'm not sure about the antispyware programs, but SpywareBlaster will happily run next to any other one. Don't install too many security programs as this can have an adverse effect on performance.

Few more useful free programs depending on her needs:

- OpenOffice office suite click here

- Paint.Net photo editor click here
