What security do I need for connecting to the 'net

Hi i'm connecting my new Pc to the internet soon and was wondering what all protection would i need for it?

I appreciate the need to run something like Ad-aware once a week or so, and also an anti virus program and install a firewall.

However, as Windows XP has its own firewall and my router (linksys) should also have one do i really need a firewall.

Can anyone recommend some products for me to use?
